Retention beats acquisition by a factor of 5. Here's what works.
1. First-week attendance is the leading indicator
Members who check in ≥3 times in their first week renew at 4× the rate of members who check in once. Set up a welcome journey that reaches out on day 3 if attendance is 0.
2. Automated renewal reminders
Under Settings → Renewal reminders, set a first reminder at 7 days and a follow-up at 1 day before expiry. Choose email AND SMS — Nigerian members open SMS 3× more than email.
3. Publish a class schedule members can actually book
Members who book at least one class per month renew at 82%. Members who never book: 41%.
4. Freeze, don't cancel
When a member wants out temporarily, don't cancel — freeze. Their code stays, their history stays, and 60% of frozen members come back within 90 days. Frozen → cancelled: only 12% return.
5. Track PRs and progress
The Progress tab in the member portal lets members log weight, measurements, and personal records. Members who log 3+ times in their first month renew at 76%.
6. Personal touch from staff
Assign a trainer to every new member for their first 30 days. Even a single "how's it going?" DM from a trainer bumps first-month retention by 18%.
7. Renewal offers, not renewal reminders
Two weeks before expiry, offer a quarterly plan at 10% off if they upgrade. Members who upgrade to longer terms churn 60% less than month-to-month.
